MAORI SOLDIERS
SITE FOR HOSTEL STRONG R.S.A. PROTEST "It is a slur on the Maori name." "It is a disgrace to Auckland." These are two of several condemnatory remarks passed by members of the executive of the R.S.A. last night, when reference was made to the proposed site of a hostel for Maori soldiers at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets. Mr. J. \Y. Kendall said the matter had been discussed by the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, which would be responsible for the payment of maintenance of £12 a week. He said that the site had been opposed by some members of the committee. He, personally, felt very sore about the .site. It would be a disgrace to put Maori soldiers in such a locality because of undesirable influences, and he considered that for the Maori soldiers, whose record in this war was of the highest, the best should be provided. The Metropolitan Committee was not responsible for the choice of the site, as it had only to arrange the finance. Mr. Norris moved that a letter of protest be sent to the authorities responsible for the selection of the site for the hostel. The motion was carried.
