SOIL CONSERVATION
ACTIVITIES OF COUNCIL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. The activities on which the recently-appointed Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council is to concentrate in the meantime were outlined by the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Armstrong. These are: (1) A declaration of catchment districts and the setting up of catchment boards; (2) a declaration of soil conservation districts and the acquisition of soil conservation reserves; (3) the collation of reports, maps and other available information; (4) the setting up of central and district standing committees of existing departments for the purpose of making recommendations to the council; (5) the consideration of a programme of survey work and the collection of data in connection with soil erosion, soil conservation, and river control; (6) the institution of a programme of general research and experimental work; (7) the inauguration of a programme of afforestation and protective covering; (8) the inauguration of a suitable programme of publicity and educational work on soil conservation practice; (9) field inspections as opportunity offers. The council has already held its first meeting. The Minister stated that the council had begun its deliberations, and further steps had been taken in the fulfilment of the Government's desire to control erosion, alleviate flooding and promote soil conservation throughout New Zealand.
