CENTRALISATION?
RACING PROBLEM
POSITION OF HORSE-FLOATS
When discussing restrictions im-! posed on road services this morning : No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr. E. ! J. Phelan, said that during a recent , tour of his district, reviewing pas- j senger and goods licenses, the question of the use of horse-floats had been raised. He had been asked to decide whether they should be allowed to continue to operate. "Considerable restrictions have already been imposed on racing.'' said Mr. Phelan. "A large amount of capital has been invested by the prietors of horse-floats, while racing itself provides a large amount of revenue throughout the Dominion, and in view of these facts 1 am of opinion that while racing is permitted a restricted.horse-float service should continue. "Racing should be centralised as much as possible. For instance, in the Auckland district racing should only be permitted at Te Rapa and on the Auckland courses. This would eliminate many miles of travel and at the same time patrons of sport would have reasonable facilities of travel by rail or boat. While ; I am not at the moment prepared to guarantee that horse-floats will be provided for the courses mentioned. 1 feel that were the racing fraternity, or those responsible for the control I of racing, to give effect to this suggestion serious consideration would be given to the question. As regards racing on courses other than those mentioned, no justification exists for the misuse of rubber or benzine to cater for them."
