OBITUARY

MR. JAMES SOFFE The death has occurred of Mr. James Soffe, aged 80. of Liverpool Street, City. Mr. Soffe was a New Zealand veteran of the last two wars. He was born in Warwickshire. England, and came to New Zealand as a lad on the ship Waikato in 1874. When a young man he took up bush land at Makairo and developed it into a farm. He volunteered early in the South African War, and was wounded in the leg. He enlisted in the Great War, leaving with the 18th Reinforcements, and was badly gassed in France. Mr. Soffe, who was a bachelor, returned to his farm after the war, remaining there until three years ago.
