LIMITED PAY
CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS
TRIBUNALS FIX AMOUNTS
When men are excused from military service in New Zealand on conscientious grounds, any income they have In excess of an amount equivalent to military pay and allowances must, under the National Service Emergency Regulations, be paid into the Social Security Fund. For the purpose of carrying out this regulation objectors are required to make weekly payments. Tribunals have been set up to hear any appeals for variation in the amounts allowed conscientious objectors or their dependents. Mr. A. H. Johnstone, K.C., acts as tribunal to hear such appeals in the Auckland province covering the area from coast to coast as far south as Taumarunui. In addition to financial matters it is within the jurisdiction of the tribunals to determine whether an objector should remain in his existing Job or be transferred to other work, which may be considered more essential.
As a basis of estimating the amount which an objector may retain, military pay and allowances are estimated at £4 a week for a single man, with additional allowances for married men and for families.
