CORRESPONDENTS' VIEWS
POTATOES
(To The Editor)
t r ead with much amusement in vour paper of the Minister urging the public to utilise any table potatoes for home garden crops. Will he tell the public how this is to be done when no "table potatoes" are obtainable in the shops. Surely any farseeing Government could have warned the public earlier of the feared shortage and given them advice through the Press as to when to plant a crop of potatoes that would be maturing now. The Government does not seem to realise that in many households the potato is the main vegetable used. With a small lettuce at Bd, celery at 2/2 a head, carrots Id each, pensioners and families in the smaller wage groups find it impossible to afford more than one vegetable and that the humble potato. Anticipating any probable shortage I planted potatoes in my flower garden between my dahlias, and now have a good crop maturing. I am certain many others would have made similar provision had a wise Government given them warning. A WOMAN GARDENER.
