OVERHAUL ADVOCATED

MAINTENANCE OF ROADS (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Suggestions for an overhaul of the methods of maintaining highways and pleas for assistance to local authorities in maintenance work; were made in the House of Representatives yesterday during consideration of the supplementary estimates under the Public Works Account.

The road deterioration caused by army vehicles was also mentioned by Mr. A. S. Sutherland (Opposition, Hauraki), who said the allocation or £25,000 for the Auckland road district seemed satisfactory until it was noted that a similar amount was voted for the Greymouth district. Some relief for local bodies to meet the heavy costs arising from military traffic was necessary.

The • Minister of Public Works, Mr. Armstrong, said the Department had only half its former maintenance staff and considerably less plant. Although votes Vere on the estimates, he doubted whether they would be spent, as labour anii materials were difficult to obtain.
