SHORTAGE OF NURSES
WHANGAREI, Friday. That he had found it necessarv to stop temporarily non-urgent admissions to the hospital was the statement made by the medical superintendent, Dr. McKechnie in his report to the Mangonui County Hospital Board. "This is the third V" been necessary to do this, he said. "It is the only wav to give the nursing staff a litt'e respite. We are having great difficulties with staff and staff conditions. It is necessary to emplov more qualified nurses and to retain those we have."
Dr. McKechnie explained that it was not the living conditions tha't were to blame, but the long hours that a staff shortage made necessary There was not sufficient staff to allow periods of rest and leave ine task of revising the schedule of payment and to take whatever steps were necessary to remedy the existing troubles was left to the doctor, the matron and the secretary. Admissions to the hospital during the past month were a record.
