PRESIDENT'S SUPPORT
Not Helpful For Candidate At
State Nomination
SOUNDS OF DERISION Rec. 1.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 21. The State Attorney-General, Mr. John J. Bennett, has won the Democratic nomination as Governor of New York, defeating* Senator James M. Mead, the candidate endorsed by President Roosevelt.
After nomination he pledged himself to "continue with all his heart and strength to support and encourage the fight for the foreign policy of President Roosevelt."
The New York Times, however, reports that the Democratic State Convention "decidedly was not" a pro-Roosevelt convention. The applause when President Roosevelt was mentioned was mild at best and speakers for Senator Mead, who mentioned that President Roosevelt's support was necessary for election, were greeted with sounds that were not exactly boos, but were plainly derisive.
