NIGHT LIFE
Mr. Macky asks, "Frankly, what else did MacClure expect to see?" Frankly, I did not expect to see—nor did I see—what those students evidently expected to see—and insisted they did see. And I've never met a soul who did see such things happening. One would naturally think even a "bad" girl's last lingering remnants of modesty would sug!gest to her that, well, that such things are not done .(in public)—even by "bad" girls. * One "would also be inclined to think of the coincidence— that, on the :very night when they paid to see just this very immorality they should see it. But—if those aforesaid "purifiers" word is to be accepted—these sinful folks "just carried on openly." And how! I leave that to the imagination of men with minds like theirs. Some people get a great kick out of their imagination. As for the correspondent's mention of venereal disease—a subject quite irrelevant to this young student argument—l would refer him to my Odd Angle column of August 11 last There he will find a masterly summing-up of the whole position by Sir William Osier, Regius Professor of Medicine in Oxford University. MacCLURE.
I am just an ordinary citizen, and belong to no "moralist squad," nor do I frequent the night clubs of any kind. However, in the course of my daily work, and whilst on any evening outing, I cannot help but realise that all is not well with our fair city and many of its young people. My young companions at work can tell of many experiences which prove that immorality and drunkenness are on the steady increase. Also, if one has occasion to take a short cut in any part of the city after dark, one cannot help but be shocked at some of the occurrences in doorways, etc. I do feel that anyone who has the interest of the city and its inhabitants at heart, cannot help but be alarmed at what is known to be going on. It is of no use being an ostrich and pretending that all is well, when the only course is to admit the danger, discover the cause, and set to work on a remedy. NOT AN OSTRICH.
