TRIBUTE PAID
DECEASED MEMBERS SIR J. ALLEN'S SERVICES (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Both branches of the Legislature paid tributes yesterday to the public services of the late Sir James Allen and the late Mr. J. B. Gow, a former member of the Legislative Council, and in the case of the House of Representatives the afternoon sitting was adjourned until the evening as a mark of respect, while the Legislative Council adjourned until this morning. Moving the motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Sir James Allen, the deputy-Leader of the House, Mr. Sullivan, enumerated the outstanding features of the former member's public service, which justified him in regarding Sir James as one of New Zealand's most distinguished public men. His policy was sometimes subjected to criticism, but he was always regarded in the highest respect, and of unchallengeable integrity. In seconding the motion, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland, also spoke of the conspicuous services of the former member dur--1 ing the last war, and of his great 1 record of 44 years of service to the I Dominion in many responsible positions.
A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. J. B. Gow was moved by Mr. Sullivan, seconded by Mr. Holland and supported by several members who testified to his high qualities as a Christian gentleman, and the service he had rendered to the community, including a leading part in developing the dairying industry in the Bay of Plenty.
