ALLIED AIRMEN
ARRIVAL IN CHINA Chinese Drive Japs. Out Of Chuhsien United Press Association.—Copyright. Rec. 1 p.m. CHUNGKING, June 9. British and American air force units have arrived in China. Acknowledging the generous Allied response to appeals for aid, the Chinese spokesman said the situation remains grave and the next few months will be very critical. He said it was not claimed that the Chuhsien airfields had been recaptured. The Japanese were engaged in hand-to-hand fighting in the streets of the suburbs until Monday, when the Chinese regained control of the city. Commenting on President Roosevelt's warning regarding poison gas, the spokesman declared that the Japanese had used gas on 800 different occasions. The Chinese had obtained copies of official Japanese instructions on the usage of gas from prisoners, and had also captured unexploded gas shells. The Associated Press reports that the spokesman at Chungking said the Chinese have again won full possession cf Chuhsien, in the Chekiang province, and wiped out the Japanese invasion force which had temporarily gained a foothold. Chinese forces which successfully completed the withdrawal from Burma have made contact with the main Chinese Army in Yunnan according to General Lungyun, Governor of Yunnan, says a Chungking message. However, the Chinese Army authorities asserted that only those forces needing reorganisation and re-equipping had returned.
