WELLINGTON MILK
HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED
(0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day "Wellington people need have no fcai of epidemic diseases as a result of consuming milk," said Mr. L S McKenzie, chairman of the Wellington City Council milk committee on the statement by Mr' ft" x, Shea . Dominion secretary of ew Zealand Farmers' Union that due to milk supply for towns becoming uneconomic temporarv licenses had been granted to small P™ cl y cer . s , with a consequent risk. What might bG true of other cireas certainly was not so of the Wellington supply, for from the beginning of the system the highest standard, and the highest standard only, had been the aim of the department.
Mr. McKenzie said that Mr. O'Shea was conversant with the position and had not referred to Wellington, but some readers would take from a general statement the impression that the Wellington supply was in question. He had referred by name to one southern district, and the public had read a few weeks ago of the condemnation of a large quantity of milk in a northern area because of its unsuitability for city delivery, but that had no reference whatever to Wellington.
Replying to Mr. McKenzie, Mr O'Shea, said that his complaint referred to areas where no control existed. "Wellington producers are well organised," he said, "and this has been a benefit to the city. The "disgraceful situation' of which I spoke is mainly in the South Island where the producers are being exploited and the industry is nothing more or less than a sweated industry and a disgrace to a country that prides itself on its labour legislation "
