"AWFULLY ROUGH DEAL"

THRIFTY PEOPLE'S TAXES

(By Telegrraph.—Parliamentary Reporter)

WELLINGTON, this day

Dealing with social security in the financial debate, Mr. Holland said the statement disclosed a most unsatisfactory state of affairs. The fund, he declared, was short of being selfsupporting this year by £6,550,000. "If we are going to build up costs of living by bonuses and subsidies," Mr. Holland, continued, "then I suggest for the consideration of the House that it would be far more just to give the 30/ a week pensioner the 5/ rise rather than the £9 10/ a week person. I want to make a plea for those thrifty people who provide for themselves. I think they have had an awfully rough deal from this Government."

Mr. Holland said that a man and his wife who earned £1 and received the age benefit of £3 paid tax on the £1, leaving £3 17/6 a week. Another couple with an income from savings or superannuation amounting to £4 paid tax on the full amount of 10/, leaving them*, with £3 10/. No person who provided for himself should be worse off.
