WOMEN ON TRAMS
CONDUCTORS' POSITIONS
SELECTION ON MONDAY
Selection of women for positions as conductors on the Auckland trams will start on Monday next. Over 200 applications have been received and the engineer and manager of the Auckland Transport Board, Mr. A. E. Ford, stated this morning that probably about 50 will be selected to meet present needs. When that is done steps will be taken to provide the women with uniforms and they will commence a period of training, which will extend over a period of about 10 days to two weeks. The board has decided to give preference to wives and relatives of the board's men now with the armed forces, and then wives and relatives of men in the armed forces. For a couple of days the women will receive instruction in regard to the routine work they will carry out and then go on. the trams to learn the routes and stops and receive further instruction from experienced conductors.
