SICK SOLDIERS
ELLERSLIE HOSPITAL MORE ACCOMMODATION In consequence of more cases of illness, principally influenza, being reported from military camps, it has become necessary for the Auckland Hospital authorities to take possession of additional buildings at the Ellerslie' racecourse. The chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said to-day that there were now 172 soldier patients at Ellerslie, and it was proposed to use the Leger stand for additional accommodation. Every facility would be given to the sick soldiers. It was probable that additional staff would be necessary, as it was likely that further military cases would have to be provided for. He considered that it would be in the best interests of all if hospital authorities had the right to go into the military camps and investigate the conditions, as at present the first intimation they got was when sick soldiers were being sent in for treatment. He pointed out that the board had to be ready for any emergency. Recently there had been epidemics of typhoid fever and cerebro-spinal meningitis. There had been another death recently from the latter disease.
