CONFERENCE HELD
TRANSPORT DIFFICULTIES Shopping hours and transport problems were discussed at a conference held yesterday between representatives of the Auckland Transport Board and the Auckland Drapers and Allied Retailers' Association. The engineer and manager of the Auckland Transport Board. Mr. A. E. Ford, said that to carry 2500 shop assistants into the city half an hour earlier would require 32 additional trams, which could not be taken from the other services during the morning peak load. Mr. N. P. Spencer, on behalf of the suburban bus services, said they were in a worse position than the trams and every vehicle was in use.
Mr. F. A. Smith said the retailers were of the opinion, which was supported by legal advice, that the proposed shopping hours did not fit in with the legal position.
The secretary of the association, Mr. R. M. Barker, said the Minister had no power under the regulations to order that shops should close at 5.30 on four nights of the week, but he had authority to fix the closing hour on the late night.
