DEFENCE
' May I dissent from the vrews expressed by the Rev. Chandler in your issue of last Saturday's paper? Put* ting military defaulters on the same plane as the early Christian martyr* seems to me a little far fetched. In the time of Origen and Tertullian, refusal of military duty meant cei>tain death—a condition that does not exist to-day, for which we are all gratefuL In the times referred to men were conscripted for a veiy different purpose from that of today. If Mr. Chandler can distinguish between the genuine and the fraudu* lent, I am sure even learned judge* would be grateful. WM. PATTERSON.
Looking at the seriousness of New* Zealand's position at the present time and noticing how some are observing the blackout and others are not, has prompted me to ask: "Have we Fifth Columnists here?" According to the Prime Minister's statement we are a united nation, but are we? Our soldiers, both overseas and on home defence, are doing their part, but are we as civilians doing ours? Admittedly some are, especially when we see our National Reserve and Home Guard. J. H. NORTH.
