NEARING COMPLETION

SAVAGE MEMORIAL CASKET SEALED VP After lying in the sacristy in the north transept of St. Patrick's Cathedral since last July, while work at the memorial, Bastion Point, was in progress, the casket containing the remains of the late Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, has been returned to the vault beneath the memorial and sealed in this permanent resting place.

Work at the memorial is nearing completion, and it is expected that the scaffolding will soon be removed. A simple inscription which has already been cut into the stone on the side facing the sea reads: "Michael Joseph Savage, 1872-1940. 'He loved his fellow-men.'"

A device in stainless steel, representing a flame, has been mounted on top of the shaft. Eventually it will be lighted from below when the steel ornament will take on the appearance of a steady flame. Progress is also being made with layingout the gardens, and although there is still a substantial amount to be done, an impression of the finished memorial, standing above the twoacre sunken garden and reflected in an crnamental pool, can be gained.

The men formerly engaged on the memorial have been diverted from the contract to help construct tunnel shelters being made in Auckland.
