BALKANS RESTIVE
HUGE NAZI DEMANDS Resignations In Rumania And Hungary Rec. 2.30 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 20. Rumanian and Hungarian reactions are expected to the German spring operations, according to a report received from Ankara. The German insistence that the Rumanian forces on the western frontier be strengthened is stated to be the reason for the resignation of General Jacobici, Chief of tne Rumanian General Staff, and other generals. The Rumanian western armies are being reduced to meet the German demands for more troops for the offensive against Russia. General Jacobici refused to take responsibility for the "suicidal policy" of the Prime Minister, Marshal Antonescu.
From other sources comes a report that Marshal Antonescu is allowing German officers and N.C.O.'s to be incorporated in the Rumanian Army. The nomination of a Vice-Regent to succeed the Regent, Admiral Horthy, in Hungary, is also believed to be connected with the coming operations. The Axis demanded from Hungary 35 divisions, but the Regent, according to reports, declined to take responsibility for such a sacrificial move. Although he will remain nominal Chief of State his son, Stefan, has been nominated Vice-Regent.
