SEVERE SANDSTORM
Interferes With Operations In Libya VICHY'S AID TO AXIS Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 20. A Cairo communique states that throughout yesterday a severe sandstorm interfered with both air and land activities. In conditions of very poor visibility our fighting patrols and mobile columns operated in a general area south of the line from Tmimi to Mekilli. Several parties of the enemy, including tanks, were engaged about 10 miles south and south-east of Tmimi, but the enemy withdrew after an exchange of artillery fire.
Further westward enemy columns appeared to be north of the TmimiMekilli road, although Mekilli itself was again found to be strongly held. *
A New York message states that the Herald-Tribune's Washington correspondent says it is established that Vichy does not deny that the French shipped mechanical transports and food for Axis forces in Libya, thus enormously assisting the campaign. Vichy denies, however, the shipment of actual war material for the Axis. Pending a decision Washington has discontinued the shipments of food to French areas in North Africa.
