COMMANDER'S TRIBUTE

A striking tribute was paid by Lieutenant-Colonel A. W. Greville commander of the 24th Battalion of the New Zealand Division, in a letter written to the mother of Private \V. D. Friday, when he congratulated her son on winning the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Private Friday's parents are well known in the Franklin district, where the3 r are farming. He is believed to be the first Maori decorated in the present war.

The commander, in a letter to Private Friday's mother, said lie heartily congratulated her on behalf of the battalion on her son's decoration. and added that her son was very fit and well, was a fine soldier and loved by all.
