SHELTER TUNNELS

FERRY PASSENGERS

BIRKENHEAD PRECAUTION

The Birkenhead Borough Council is proceeding with the construction of four air-raid shelters which are being driven into the cliff by the Birkenhead ferry wharf. Each shelter will be 20ft long, 9ft wide and 7ft high, and will accommodate approximately 50 persons.

The entrances will be well protected by sandstone walls, and each shelter will be connected by a communication tunnel. These shelters are primarily for the use of ferry passengers if a steamer has just arrived or is about to depart when an alarm is given. The plans have received the approval of the city engineer.
