GRAVE CONCERN
MAORIS BEFORE COURT
MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT
"It is a matter of very grave concern that so many Maoris—and young Maoris, too—are coming before this Court for offences arising from drunkenness involving violence." said Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.lvH, in the Police Court this morning, when sentencing two Maoris, Peter Tarawa (20) and George Rameka Kere (21), labourers, to two months' imprisonment for assaulting a Chinese named Wong Kai on December 24.
The' two accused were further charged with mischief by wilfully damaging three chairs, crockery and food of a total value of £4 15/6. Each pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Through an interpreter, three Chinese gave evidence concerning a fracas which occurred in a Chinese restaurant in Grey's Avenue shortly before nine o'clock on Christmas Eve.
On the second count the magistrate convicted and discharged Tarawa and Kere.
