ENTRIES IN BOOK
MESSAGES CAME IN FAST Further evidence by firemen was given at the inquiry into the fire at John Burns and Company, Limited, yesterday afternoon. Harold Arthur Anderson, probationer fireman, said he had had only one month's service on the morning of the fire, when he was working at the watchroom with R. Pelham. Witness stated that it was his duty to write up the "Occurrence book," and the entries in the book (produced) were in his writing. He did not record the call about the ladder and the parapet, as neither he nor Pelham could make anything of it. When he received the district call he got into touch with the other stations. Telephone messages were coming through fairly fast, added witness. It was an omission not to ring the Khyber Pass water station, and it was due to the many telephone calls. The water station rang the watchroom, the call being taken by Campbell. To Mr. Goldstine witness said he could not remember whether he heard Campbell ring the water station.
George Alexander McKenzie, deputy superintendent, described the arrival of the No. 3 machine. It was under his instruction that the latter was brought up for the rescue of Mr. McWhirter.
