£20 FINE
INTOXICATED IN CAR COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE "One feature of your case causes me to relax the usual course of justice and not send you to prison, and that is that you had enough sense to remain in your car and not drive it," said Mr. J. Morling, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, to John Charles Howell, aged 41. Howell, a waterworks employee, for whom Mr. P. Jenkins appeared, admitted that he was in a state of intoxication whiie in charge of a motor car in Broadway, Newmarket, on Saturday, Sub-Inspector Macnamara said the poMce found Howell sitting behind the wheel of his car at 6.25 p.m. He was intoxicated. This was Howell's first offence Mr. Jenkins stated that Howell met some soldiers on Saturday and had more liquor than he intended to take and was accustomed to. He had recently been working long hours and evidently the liquor had taken effect upon him. Realising his condition, Howell wisely decided to sit in his car and not drive it. Howell was fined £20. The magistrate disqualified him from holding a license for twelve months.
