Ellerbeck Memorial Fours— Alison's Half-length Win The annual lours for the Ellerbeck Memorial trophy were rowed on Saturday afternoon by the Waitemata Boating Club. Mr. R. G. Barker was starter and Mr. J. S. Jones judge. Pour crews competed over the Tamaki Drive course. The first heat resulted Oalbraith, D. Mitchell, R- Hughes. M. Wyatt 1; C. H. Cairns. T. Sharkey, D. Biske. J. Ross a. Won by three lengths. Cairns was first away, but Oalbraith. rowing a fast stroke, soon caught the leader. At the bridge Oalbraith took the lead to go on and win comfortably by three lengths. The second heat resulted:—M. Alison. R. Mil:kelson, L. Hawkins, D. Menzies 1: H. Spoor. D. Fraser, E. Nolan. W. Endean 2. Won by half a length. The crews went away to an even start, and raced together to the bridge. There, to avoid a foul. Spoor's coxswain pulled too far out off his course, and at the buoy Alison had nearly a length's lead. Spoor made a splendid recovery, but Alison held on to win by half a length. Final.—The crews of Galbraith and Alison met in the final. This was an even go to the bridge where Alison started to forge ahead and. despite a big effort by Galbraith, went on to win by half a length.
West End's Veterans.—The winner of the veterans''four at West End's At Home on Saturday, J. Skinner's crew, gave a splendid display of rowing. It was an object lesson for the many young members. The No. 3 was A. J. Coulam (his sons are active members), who in abput 1920 (as A. James) was Auckland light-heavy-weight boxing champion. Two other title holders were also members at that time—A. Pooley (heavy-weight) and Lou Ross (lightweight).
