SANDERS CUP

DAVINA'S THIRD WIN

Official Selection Not To Be Made Until After Fifth Trial

By winning her third race in the fourth of the Sanders Cup trials on Saturday Davina qualified as the Auckland representative. The race will be held at Lyttelton in January. Davina won the first two trials, in the first of which Caress, which won the cup for Auckland in the past two seasons, capsized. Caress was second in the second trial and won the third.

Davina's three wins, however, have left her with an unassailable margin of points, even if she does not score in the fifth trial, to be held in conjunction with the Akarana Club's races next Saturday. The official selection will not be announced until after that race.

Caress lost the trial on Saturday rather sensationally to Davina. After the first round Caress had a lead of 4m 355, but on the last run down the harbour Davina reduced Caress' lead to lm 32s at Shoal Bay buoy mark, the wind having eased up a lot. Both boats were now close together for the beat up to the finishing line. After fetching Northcote Point Caress made a board on starboard towards the western shore, but Davina made a well-judged board up harbour on port, holding on until she was abreast of Northcote wharf. Davina now threw round to starboard, and when she met Caress on port near the finishing line she put Caress about and took the lead. Both boats now made two short tacks to fetch the line, Davina keeping on Rogers' weather to get the gun by 23 seconds, with Gael, third boat, over 7m later. The points now stand:—Davina (S. Mason), 3580; Caress (W. Rogers). 2045.

A Press Association message states that Delight has been selected as the Wellington • representative.
