MR. FRANCIS MANDER
AX INTERESTING CAREER
His ninety-third birthday was celebrated to-day by Mr. Francis Mander, of Keith Avenue, Remuera. Mr. Mander's parents came to New Zealand in the ship Ramillies in 1847 and settled in Onehunga, where Mr. Mander was born in the following year. Mr. Mander is now the oldest Onehunga-born person and he is stated to be the only Onehunga-born boy to become a member c' Parliament.
After a variety of occupations, Mr. Mander in his early twenties began his long association with timber in the bush around the Hunua Ranges. Later he was in the northern kauri timber trade for about 30 years, save for a break when he worked kauri over the Waitakere Ranges and down into the Henderson Creek, building a railway over Nihotupu that was something of an engineering feat.
He won the Marsden seat for the late Mr. W. F. Massey's Reform party in 1902. and retained it for 20 years against allcomers, before resigning to go into the Upper House for seven years. Mr. Mander is the oldest member of the Remuera Bowling Club.
