CONFERENCE ENDS

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

DOMINION RECONSTRUCTION

A decision to follow up its deliberations and to make its finding as widely as possbile was arrived at the final session of the interim conference of the Dominion Reconstruction Movement in the Y.W.C.A. Hall last night. The importance of general co-ordination throughout the Dominion was stressed and it was stated that once this was achieved a campaign on a larger scale could be launched.

The formation of reconstruction groups to be set up throughout New Zealand for the purpose of giving a lead to the people in putting forward policies and presenting these to local and national representatives was recommended. A publicity and educational campaign would include the publishing of a booklet or booklets dealing with the work of the conference and also the writing of pamphlets dealing with various aspects of the conference. Clergy and other public speakers sympathetic to the aims of the conference were to be approached to give talks on aspects of Dominion reconstruction and lectures and demonstrations were to be organised and widely advertised.

The speakers last night were Mr. F. M. Price and Mr. F. C. Jordan. In the morning, findings of the Maori conference held on Saturday were presented by Professor H. Belshaw and Mr. K. Tarawa. Land, housing, health, education, employment and social welfare problems were dealt with and it was urged that any reconstruction should take into account the increasing relative importance of the Maori population. Other, sessions considered agriculture, with Mr. L. C. Hall and Mr. G. L,. Stubbs as speakers; education, Miss O. Foster; youth activities, Mr. E. Hillary, Miss J. Warren and Mr. R. Beckett; finance, Mr. J. Hogan and Mr. F. D. Danks; spiritual development, when a paper by Canon W. W. Averill was read; moral and mental advancement, Dr. H. Sutcliffe and Miss J. Sutherland.
