THRILLING FINISH

ALISON CUP

ROYEVRUS WINS

BEAU LEON SECOND SURPRISE IN HURDLES The Auckland Racing club's midspring meeting opened in showery weather at Ellerslie to-day. The track was on the heavy side following persistent showers during ihe past 24 hours. There was a good attendance. Outsider Scores The first race of the day, the Melrose Handicap, was run in divisions and the winners were Tea Drop and Gayjax, the former an outsider who returned a dividend of over £20. Tea Drop owed hio success in the first division to a fine finishing effort in the last furlong. He was always fairly well placed, but was still in sixth position at the home turn. Beaucoup and Verus, the pacemakers throughout, were clear of Taku Kara. Lady Pay and Koriro Pai at this stage. Beaucoup was then doing slightly better than Verus, but when Hain sent Tea Drop along at the distance, the Tea Tray gelding responded in fine style to have the race in safe keeping fifty yards from the judge. He won comfortably by a length and a half from Verus who stayed on well to defeat Beaucoup by a neck for second money. The next to finish was Taku Kara, Gem Tray and Lady Pay. The last-named stopped badly in the final 100 yards. The Second Division Sir Reynard, the each way favourite, appeared to be a reasonably good thing beaten in the second division. He commenced well but fell back at the three furlong post to be e:giit lengths behind the leader, Radio Call, at the straight entrance. The Crow then forged to the front from Tea Raider, Radio Call and Gayjax. At the half distance Gavjax went to the front while Sir Reynard could be seen making his effort in the middle of the track. The favourite, continuing his challenge, got to within a neck of Gayjax at the judge. The Crow- was half a length further back third, and then came Velhaven and Silonyx, both of whom finished well.

A Consistent Improver The Cambridge-owned and trained Surveyor mare Golden Survey treated her Milford Handicap opposition with scant respect over the concluding stages of the race. Golden Survey was seven lengths behind and in a similar position with a furlong and a half to go. Once the field reached the false rail she moved up. and. coming through on the fence, won running away by two lengths from Odtaa. At the Avondale meeting on this course on November 8 Golden Survev also won impressively, returning her supporters a big dividend, while later, at Te Rapa, she was only defeated in the last few strides by Betterman. Golden Survey is "likelv to go on to better things. When the barrier was released Verulam and Odtaa took up the running and thev made the pace three lengths clear of Silver Clarion. Golden Bonnet. Bronze Meter and Onetea as thev raced through the top to the home stretch. Verulam and Odtaa were fighting the issue out at the distance. where Golden Survev made her run on the rails, and the result was quickly put beyond doubt. Odtaa just shaded Verulam for second place, while Babrow came home strongly next, just ahead of Bronze Meter, with Heroic Star sixth. Results:— XfXBOSE MAIDEN HANDICAP •( £tj|. Stx fartenf*.
