CLAUDELANDS RACE
Josedale Grattan Is Back-marker
WAIKATO SUMMER MEETING
The centre of interest at the Waikato Trotting Club's summer meeting at t'laudelancls next Saturday will be the Auckland Cup Trial, for which there is a field of IG. including the brilliant American-bred pacer Josedale Grattan. wlio recently won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in the world's record time of 4.13. The Trial is run over a mile and a quarter. 2.4S limit, and Josedale Grattan is called upon to concede from 3Uvds to ISycls to the opposition. It is a d'ifficult task, with such tine sprinters as Double Peter. Katene. Betty Boop. Our Peggy, and Uenuku engaged, but bv no means an insuperable one for a horse of Josedale Grattan's class. When acceptances for the eight events closed last night the Frankton and Te Kowhat Handicaps were so well patronised that provision will be made to run these races in divisions. The President's Handicap, two miles. t.r!B limit, has ten acceptors, four of whom are on the limit. Kinawley. one of the front-markers, ran an excellent .-ivond to Katene last Saturday, and she should be hnrd to beat in this event. Her principal opponents may be the Neutrality bracket. Double Peter and Bronze Queen. Details of the acceptances are:— 11.45— INNOVATION" HANDICAP <trotters) of £13S. one mile and a half, limit 3.49.—Arabill. Avalon Bingen. Crown Thorpe. Etta Girl. RETURNING TO FORM Gold Bank ran his best race for a lorcr time when he pressed Clockwork over the last hundred yards of a mile and a half race at a matinee meeting at New Brighton last Saturday. Gold Bank gained fame when he won an all-aged stakes at Addington about IS months ago, but hue not won since then. He is a fast pacer and is good enough to win two or three races if he would reproduce his best when the colours are up. CLOCKWORK IS GOOD Clockwork started smartlv in the Piunket Handicap at the Canterbury Owners and Breeders' Association charitv meeting and. after trailing Waitaki * Power, U alter Moore. April Direct and Gold Bank for a mile and a quarter, displayed a lot of courage to wear his opponents down over the last furlong. His time for the mile and a half was 3.16 2-5. He has only to repeat his performance to score an overdue win.
