PRIMARY PRODUCTION

LABOUR SHORTAGE PROBLEM <O.C> WHANGAREI, this day. Support for a resolution passed by its associate Ixnly in Auckland regarding the establishment of a voluntary labour corps was accorded by the Whangarei Primary Production Council at a meeting last night. The meeting also decided that the Government. through the National Council, should be urged to safeguard the already acute farm labour position. The* fertiliser committee reported that 390 appeals against the allocation of fertiliser under the rationing scheme had been received, and of these 285. representing a total of 6-5S tons of phosphate manures, had been afforded some relief. The remaining 105 had been declined. Receiving the report, the council decided that if it were necessary in the future to ration fertiliser, the Government should be asked to reconsider the allocation for cropping, taking into consideration the class of land on which the fertiliser was to be used. It was also decided to ask the National Council to approach the Government to have blood and bore treated as a phosphate manure It was further decided to ask the National Council to assist lime works to import, or have manufacturcl locally, screening material of wire, and to assist workers in any way possible to increase the output of lime.
