AUCKLAND CAPTAIN
R.A.F. FLYING FORTRESS The honour of being appointed captain of a Flying Fortress bomber has fallen to the lot of an Auckland boy—Flying-Officer D. M. RolphSmith, whose parents reside at Ranfurly Road, Epsom.
Flvinp-Officer Rolph-Smith. an Auckland Grammar School old boy, has a short service commission in the R.A.F. He was one of a small group of pilot-officers who were the first to leave New Zealand after the outbreak of war—being trained at Mangere under the late SquadronLeader D. M. Allan, and later at Wigram. Flying-Officer Rolph-Smith, prior to his appointment, had been engaged as an instructor in an Operational Training Unit in England.
