(0.C.) SYDNEY, November 25. After having come all the way from Auckland to recover her child, Mrs. Phoerje Maude Linton, 32, of Northcote, was awarded -custody of the child, Gwenda, aged seven, in Judge Mansfield's chambers at Brisbane. Mrs. Linton had applied for a writ of habeas corpus against her father and step-mother, Joseph Augustus Coleman, 67, and Ella Coleman, 64. She found her child, living with them at Cribb Island, a Queensland seaside resort, 10 miles from Brisbane. According to her affidavit and statements in Court, Mrs. Linton said she married Phillip John Linton, of Hobart, in Melbourne in January, 1933. He deserted her in August, 1936, and she was now a machinist earning £5 10/ a week. She said that when she went to work she left her child with the Colemans. Early this year the Colemans ot> jected to her seeing her child. Mr. Coleman interjected that this was untrue. He said he objected to some of his daughter's company. She worked in cafes. Mrs. Linton said that on April 24 whiie in a large Auckland store with Mrs. Coleman she went off into the crowd taking the child with her. She put Gwenda into a convent at Avondale under the Sisters of Mercv but on July 2 when Gwenda attended a dental clinic she was taken by the Colemans. On July 31, she got a Court order giving her custody xt ~ but the Colemans had left New Zealand by a vessel on July 29. She followed them to Sydney went to Melbourne and * y had come back to Sydney. As a result of further inquiries she went to Brisbane, where she found the Colemans and her child at Cribb Island. Mrs. Coleman: We are afraid of the company that the child is going into.
