MR. JAMES DONALD

FORMER CITY COUNCILLOR

A member of the Auckland City Council for 18 years and a prominent business man, Mr. James Donald died in a private hospital early this morning.

Born in Auckland in 1877, the late Mr. Donald was a son of the late Mr. Alexander Donald, who was Maj or of Grey Lynn and the founder of the well-known business firm of A. Donald and Sons. As a lad of 15 he joined the staff of his father's firm, later becoming managing director.

Throughout his life Mr. Donald was keenly interested in local body activities. Following his father, he became a member of the Grey Lynn Borough Council, and also a member of the Point Chevalier Road Board. In 1923 he was elected to the Auckland City Council and held office until his retirement at the last elections. In the sporting sphere he was

most interested in yachting, and for a number of years was president of the Richmond Cruising Club. At the time of his death he was an honorary member and patron of the club. He also took a keen interest in bowling and tennis.

In 1901 Mr. Donald married Miss M. Jouning, of Auckland. His wife predeceased him seven years ago, and he is survived by three sons and one daughter. They are Messrs. Alexander, Trevor and Ravmond Donald and Mrs. N. Allright,~ all of Auckland. There are three brothers four sisters and four grandchildren
