SHOP LIGHTS

METERS FOR TESTING

ISSUED TO WARDENS Simple in design, and in shape like small cameras, testing meters have been issued to wardens in Auckland under the Emergency Precautions Service, so that lights in shop windows and doorways can be accurately measured. ..The Auckland Lighting Controller. Mr. R. H. Bartley, said the use of the meters would avoid a lot of confusion in connection with lighting intensities under the reduced lighting regulations. Each district warden had been allocated one of the meters, which had been made in New Zealand. The meters were extremely simple in application, and remarkably accurate in results. The operation was based on the recognised principle of using a standard source of illumination, and in this particular case it was a 14 voltage lamp, operated from a single dry-cell battery. That source of light was

through the medium of a sliding disc, balanced with the source of light to be tested, and the balance was obtained by matching the colour of the standard lamp, and the source of the light to be tested. The instrument was calibrated.

Mr. Bartley said the makers were to be congratulated on the production of such a reliable instrument, which would go a long way towards eliminating differences which might exist when a degree of illumination was compared by different individuals. He added that a meeting of wardens had been held and the working principles of the instrument had been explained.

Mr. Bartley said the uniformitv within the reduced lighting jfegulations was the object that was being sought.
