V.A.'S RESPONSE
CALL FROM EGYPT SELECTING 200 WOMEN Voluntary aids have responded enthusiastically to the call for 200 more women from New Zealand for the Middle East, according to representatives of the Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance. Mrs. G. S. Cammell, lady district superintendent of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, said to-day that she had had no difficulty in obtaining the required number of volunteers from the Auckland district, which included North Auckland, Gisborne and as far south as Taumarunui. The only hard part was that a number of the girls were disappointed because they did not come within the age group decided upon by the authorities. "The girls who are offering," said Mrs. Cammell, "are a splendid type." Mrs. E. M. Wray, centre commandant of the Red Cross Society, said that their quota for Auckland was 50, and the applications had gone to Wellington, where the final selection would take place. Officers' applications went a week ago. "The girls who have applied are very thrilled at the chance of going overseas," said Mrs. Wray. "They must be single, extremely fit and between the ages of 24 and 34. Officers have to be between 24 and 40 years of age." The Women's War Service Auxiliary is making the choice of girls for clerical work. The requirements for this section include efficiency in shorthand and typewriting and a good knowledge of general office work. Applications will be confined to members of the auxiliary and its affiliations.
