The Cardinal To Start In Alison Cup
(Special.) MATAMATA, this day. The Cardinal is to take his place in the Alison Cup field and will be ridden by the stable apprentice, L. W. Ford. This lad has been out of luck since his accident at the Thames meeting, but is ridine well on the tracks. The Cardinal is a very fit horse and should show up at the end of the journey. King Hey has been in the paddock since he met with an accident prior to the last Wellington meeting. It was thought at the time that his recovery was doubtful, but he has made splendid progress and, although getting on in years, his trainer is optimistic regarding his 'future. 6
Greek Queen and Floodlight have been turned out for a spell. When the season opened, R. H. Martin had 27 horses in his stable, with prospects of a record season. He has since had a fair measure of success; also a share of misfortune. The first untoward incident was the. fatality to the handy steeplechaser, En Tour. Then followed injuries to King Key and Lord Waitangi. Now, like other trainers, Martin is faced with an acute labour shortage and, feeling that he would be unable to handle his big team as it should be, he has sent some horses back to their owners. Others have been transferred to different stables. Among those left in active commission are: Paymaster, St. Leon. Greek Princess Century Expellant, High Spy, Ureklaw! Square Cut, Rosen Gold, Captain Bell Valsom and Valimeen. '
