TROOPS' CONDUCT
ARMY PATROLS ACTIVE WEEK-END OPERATIONS Referring to comments made by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. in the Police Court yesterday regarding the conduct of some troops in the city. Brigadier P. H. Bell, D.5.0., officer commanding the Northern Military District, said to-day that a provost section operated in Auckland and patrolled the streets continuously. He also pointed out that every weekend there was an officers' picquet from Papakura camp on duty in the city.
Brigadier Bell said that there were thousands of troops in camps and barracks close to Auckland and, in comparison with the number who were able to obtain leave, street disturbances were comparatively few. Every effort was made to ensure that troops behaved themselves while on leave, but it was impossible for military police to cover every part of the city at once. Mentioning the incidents referred to in the Court, the brigadier said that the information he had received was that when the provost patrol passed the scenes of the disturbance some 10 or 15 minutes previously there was no sign of any trouble.
