SMOKED OPIUM
ARREST ON SHIP TWO CHINESE FRATERNISE Caught smoking opium in the hold of a ship, on which they are passengers, two Chinese seamen, Chin Wan (30), and Bing Sun (37), were arrested about 4 o'clock this morning. They appeared later in the Police Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of smoking opium. Mr. Andrew Chong, who acted as interpreter, said the two seamen wished to explain that they did not know it was an offence to smoke opium in this country. They also pointed out that opium could be bought from shops licensed by the Government of Hongkong, from which place they had just come. Neither had sufficient money to pay a fine. Detective-Sergeant Nalder, who prosecutcd, admitted that there was no suggestion of trafficking in this case and that the two Chinese were merely enjoying a smoke together on the ship. The magistrate. Mr. J. Morling, imposed the minimum fine of £12 10/ in each case, in default, one month's imprisonment. He made an order that the two Chinese are to be placed on board their ship before it sails.
