BATTLEDRESS REFUSED
(P.A.) PALMERSTON N., this day. Brought before the Magistrate's Court by a military escort, George Ayson Watts, formerly a lorry driver of Wanganui, was sentenced °. ? lx weeks' gaol on a charge of failing to obey an order to draw battledress from the quartermaster's store at the Palmerston North camp Defendant pleaded not guilty. Defendant said his earlier appeal on conscientious grounds had been dismissed. He was interested in Jehovah's Witnesses. He had been declared unfit for overseas service He added it was against the laws of the Bible to have anything to do with armed forces, and to do so would be helping to kill. Mr. Lawry, S.M., said he could not over-ride the Appeal Board.
