OVER 200 DELEGATES ATTEND
(P.A.) TIMARU, Tuesday. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand was opened in Timaru to-night. Over 260 delegates, representing nearly all parishes in the Dominion, were present.
Owing to the illness of the retiring Moderator, the Rt. Rev. G. H. Jupp, the sermon at the opening service was preached by the Rev. J, Lawson Robinson, of Christchurch.
The opening address was given by the Rt. Rev. John Davie, of Masterton, Moderator-elect.
The Assembly is expected to last seven days. The report of the Public Questions Committee is likely to come forward to-morrow night, the maintenance of the ministry report on Friday morning, and the church union report on Friday night.
The Rev. Lawson Robinson, in acting as deputy to-night for the Rt. Rev, G. H. Jupp, expressed regret that he was not able to complete his term of Office, and expressed on behalf of the Assembly sympathy with Mr. Jupp in his illness and hope for his speedy recovery.
(The Moderator's address is reported on page 5.)
