SOLDERS' PAY
AUSTRALIAN RISE
ALLOWANCES INCREASED
The raising of the daily pay of Australian soldiers to 8/ a day, compared with 7/ received by New Zealand soldiers and 7/6 from the date of embarkation for overseas, is projvided for in the first Budget pre'sented by the Federal Treasurer, I Mr. Chifley.
The New Zealand soldier when overseas is able to receive personal | pay amounting to 3/ a day, whereas I the maximum that can be drawn by the Australian soldier is 2/6 a day. From his gross pay the Australian is obliged to make a minimum allotment of 3/6 a day to a relative, dependent or personal banking account, and another 2/ is held for him as deferred pay. The New Zeai lander from his gross pay overseas , of 7/6 a day has to allot at least 4/6 a day, whether to a relative or to a | banking account. No deferred pay lis held for him.
In the Federal Budget there is provision for an increase in dependents' allowances. The allowance for wives is 6d a day. with or without children. In the last New Zealand [Budget there was provision for a .domestic allowance of 1/ a day, but I this begins to operate for wives with one or more children. The wife allowance in both countries is 3/ a day. In the case of dependent children the allowance !n New Zealand is 1/6 a day, whereas in Australia the allowances are 2/6 a day for the first child, 2/ for the second and 1/6 a day for the third.
