FRUIT TRADE

AWARD SOUGHT

OBJECTION BY CHINESE

A fruit trade application which had come before the Arbitration Court some months ago and had been dismissed was revived in the Court to-day when Mr. A. W. Croskery, of Wellington, on behalf of the Auckland Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants (other than butchers, grocers, hairdressers and chemists' assistants) Industrial Union of Workers asked that complete recommendations from the Conciliation Council be made into an award. Mr. C. C. King, for the Auckland Fruit and Vegetable Retail TradersUnion of Employers, also asked that the recommendations be made into an award.

Mr. H. J. Bishop, on behalf of the Auckland Chinese Fruiterers' Association (Inc.). the Auckland Indian Association, and individual Chinese and Indian fruit hawkers, opposed the applications. Mr. Croskery challenged the right of Mr. Bishop to appear and attack the recommendations, as he did not represent parties to the negotiations. Mr. Bishop pointed out that the Chinese Association represented 73 Chinese shop occupiers who employed 56 assistants, and the Indian association had 29 shopkeepers and 21 assistants. He added that he viewed the proceedings with suspicion as being framed so as to denv representation to the Chinese and Indian fruiterers. He suggested that all employers should have been made parties to the proceedings from the inception, with the right to appoint assessors and suggest counter proposais.

th n Court's permission, Mr. Bishop called Mr. C. C. King, secretary of the applicant union of emPayers, and examined him about the meetings and methods employed for the formation of his union. (Proceeding.)
