RETURN TO WORK

DRIVERS' DISPUTE

DISMISSAL EFFECTIVE

As the outcome of the dismissal of a driver by the firm of Ernest and Herbert Craig, Limited, other drivers employed by the firm ceased work yesterday and the matter was taken up by the Auckland Drivers' Union, which asked that the driver should be reinstated.

Representations were made yesterday to the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb, who arranged for the sitting of a disputes committee, as provided for under the award. The disputes committee met this morning at the office of the Conciliation Commissioner and all parties were represented. The committee adjourned at midday without reaching a decision, but at 2.30 p.m it was announced by the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. C. L. Hunter that a "satisfactory decision had been arrived at." This decision was that the dismissal should take its course.

About 16 drivers were affected by the dispute, but they returned to work at 1 p.m.
