DEMANDS FOR MEN

NAZIS ON "ALLIES ,, Bulgars Reported Disinclined To Declare War United rre.«s Association.—Copyrtpht. Rec. 1 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 26. According to well-informed quarters in Ankara, Germany is bringing pressure to bear on her "allies" to provide 1,000.000 men for the Russian fighting. It is stated that Hitler is demanding 100.000 from Rumania, 150.000 from Hungary, 100,000 from Slovakia, 150.000 from Bulgaria and 500,000 from Italy. It is reported from Ankara that the Bulgarian Cabinet, after a secret session, decided to ask Germany to modify her demand that Bulgaria should declare war on Russia and that Bulgarian troops, instead, be used for occupation duties in any part of Europe. An Ankara message states that Germany is reported to have sent a Note to Bulgaria demanding her immediate entry into the war against Russia, otherwise Germany will consider Bulgaria has violated her pact with the Reich, and the Gorman Army will occupy the country. The Note also demands the use of Bulgarian ships, ports and aerodromes. Several German divisions are concentrated on the Bulgarian-Riimsn-ian frontier, says the Soviet news agency. The impression prevails in Turkey that Bulgarian will enter the war. Nerve War on Turkey With a view to facilitating the task of Dr. Clodius. leader of the German Economic Mission to Turkey, unofficial German sources are conducting a nerve war against Turkey. Reports emanating from Sofia and Bucharest say that the i Germans issued an ultimatum demanding passage of troops across Turkey. Four British - owned American Tomahawk fighters have arrived at a Turkish aerodrome, says the Ankara correspondent of the Associated Press. It is stated that these are the first of a consignment of 36 Tomahawks which the British are releasing to Turkey from the hundreds now reaching British aerodromes in the Middle East from America. Another Ankara message states that a London firm has secured a contract amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds for reconstructing the piers and improving the harbour facilities at Alexandretta and Mersin, on the Turkish coast northeast of Cyprus. Thousands of Kurdish riflemen, under rebellious mountain chieftains, are reported to have established a free State between the British and Russian zones of occupation and to have defied the Allies to oust them, says the Teheran correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain. They are reported to have seized control of important roads. The ex-Shah suppressed and disarmed warrior tribes, but they now are plentifully equipped with rifles abandoned by deserting conscripts.

NAZI BRUTALITY Norwegians Ordered To Give Up Blankets NEEDED FOR SOVIET FRONT Rec. 2 p.m. GOTHENBURG, Sept. 26. Terboven, Nazi Commissioner in Norway, has ordered all wool blankets, except in northern districts, to be surrendered by Tuesday for , the use of German troops in Russia. Any who fail to comply will be liable to imprisonment for three years. The Norwegian Director-General of Health, Lieutenant-Colonel Evang, stated in London that this was a desperate and brutal step. The climate in Norway demands the heating of houses in many districts for eight months of the year. The Germans are unable to supply sufficient fuel for heating. Warm clothing and bedding are more necessary than ever, in view of the lack of foodstuffs of high calorific content. The newspaper Vrijnederwand says news has reached London that the soldier son of General Christiansen, German Military Governor of Holland, has disappeared in Holland. It is believed that he is one of the "Dutch canal victims." Frantic efforts by Germans to trace Christiansen have failed. CRUELTY TO HORSES Rec. 2.30 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 28. German forces in Russia, who are now forced to use more horses, are adopting an ingenious but cruel method of preventing animals shying under gunfire and dive-bombing. The Germans are piercing the eardrums and cutting the vocal cords so that horses neither hear nor make a sound when they are wounded, which would give away their positions. MOSCOW CONFERENCE Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 26. The Moscow radio stated that M. Litvlnoff has been appointed an additional member of the Russian delegation to meet the British and American missions to Moscow.
