BREAD SUPPLIES
CURTAILING DELIVERIES
AUCKLAND OPPOSITION* , Opposition to the Government's proposed restriction of bread deliveries in cities and towns in the Dominion by trie proni'oltion of rounds, in order to conserve petrol, is expressed by the Auckland Master Bakers' Association in a statement issued by the executive, as follows:—
"The executive of the baking trade in Auckland points out that much is already being done by the trade to assist the war effort. Master bakers are working very long hours and in many cases are short-handed because of men being released to the forces. "The executive of the trade is opposed to the suggestion for wholesale delivery only on the following grounds: (1) The anticipated saving in petrol would be doubtful. The public is probably unaware of the large reduction already made by the trade. (2) A great deal of disorganisation and inconveneience would be caused to the public. (3) It is verv doubtful whether the retail shops would be able or willing to cope with the huge increase of bread trade which would result. (1) Much dislocation of drivers' labour would follow.
"The bakers of Auckland wish to make it clear that if the Government in controlling the industry dictates that the public must go to tiie shops for their bread this will onlv be done without the approval and against the wishes of the trade in Auckland. The trade is already endeavouring to maintain an adequate service to the public under difficult conditions."
