REMUERA SEAT

AGREEMENT REACHED

MR. ENDEAN CONFIRMED

A decision to confirm officially the candidature of the sitting member. Mr. W. P. Endean, was reached at a fully-attended meeting of the Remuera electorate committee of the New Zealand National party on Saturday night. A full discussion followed addresses which were given by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, and the Dominion president of the party. Mr. Alexander Gordon. Mr. Alex. McKenzie, deputy-chair-man, and Mr. A. W. Grant, secretary of the Auckland division of the New Zealand National party, were also present.

A unanimous vote of thanks, loyalty and confidence was accorded Messrs. Holland and Gordon.

"That is the end of all the controversy, 1 ' remarked an official of the National party to-day. Early last June Mr. Endean announced his intention of again being a candidate for the seat in the event of there being a general election this year. Tn accordance with constitutional procedure, the electorate committee of the National party called for nominations of intending candidates as a preliminary to holding a postal selection ballot of party members in the electorate. Five nominations were received, but the name of Mr. Endean was not submitted, and he announced his intention of contesting the seat as a National Independent candidate.

Upon the matter being submitted to Mr. Holland for a solution of the difficulty, hQ stated that Mr. Endean would receive his support and that of the Parliamentary party, thus becoming the official candidate. The question as to whether Mr. Endean's candidature should be approved was made the subject of a postal ballot, the decision of which was in the affirmative by 676 votes to 563. In the meantime arrangements had also been made for Mr. Holland to address the electorate committee, the meeting on Saturday evening being the result.
