NO TRY IF A PLAYER EVEN BRUSHES THE CORNER POST
Doubt fairly frequently arises among Rugby spectators as to what constitutes touch or touch-in-goal, and what are the powers of a line umpire.
A correspondent has asked whether a referee in a recent game should not have awarded a try to an attacking player who brus'hed the corner post but did not knock it over as he raced across. The line umpire had not raised his flag.
The referee's decision was correct. It was no try. A ball is in touch-in-goal if it touches the corner post, or if the player carrying it touches the corner post. Further, what the referee decides is final. He can overrule the touch judges at any stage.
A point worth noting is that the flag on a corner post, strangely enough, is not regarded as part of the corner post. A player can touch the flag ana still score.
